Did you know the British Drone Taranis was named after the Celtic god of Thunder?  It’s one of the new inventions which was built for military use. The drone has changed the face of combat, gone are the days when a pilot had to sit in a cockpit to go for a mission. The amazing thing is the pilots can control the airplane from the ground.

Whether it is supposed carryout surveillance or even undertake a military operation, the drone is well equipped. Besides that the drone is undetectable which act as an element of surprise when in an enemy territory. We are going to learn more about the Taranis to understand how it works.     

What is Taranis?

It’s also known as Raptor and can attack both aerial and ground targets. Besides that the UAV has sealth capabilities which make it easier for it to fly undetected. This explains why there were secretive test carried between 2013 and 2015.    

The test was done in Australian desert which included a complete stealth flight and simulated weapons test. The British demonstrator program has been estimated to cost about € 200 million.  

The Taranis has been designed to fly international missions while carrying various kinds of weapons. It will be able to mark targets, sustain surveillance, gather intelligence, carry out strikes and even deterring adversaries.

The drone can be controlled from anywhere on earth via satellite link. it will change the face of combat and it is expected to venture into military service after 2030. We can wait to see what the Raptor has installed for us.

Development and design of the British drone  

The British Drone Taranis was built by BAE Systems Military Air and information and unveiled to the public in 2010. The project was led by GE Aviation Systems, the Ministry of Defense and QinetiQ. Though, the program was entirely managed by BAE Systems.

Each of the organization had a part to play in the development of the Raptor. The BAE systems were in charge of technology components such as stealth technology, system control infrastructure and system integration.

When it comes to the autonomy of the system both BAE Systems and QinetiQ had a role to play. On the other hand the GE Aviation System were responsible for providing electrical power and Taranis’ Fuel-gauging systems.    

How is Taranis flown?

The British drone Taranis can fly up to a speed of 700mph. This is may seem impossible considering the kind of weapons it carries and still manages to fly under the radar. But, it is true.

Tough, it uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to find targets and navigate it still needs a highly skilled pilot.  For this reason the pilot has to be trained on how to control and navigate the drone. This explains why there was test carried out in the Australian desert.  

The pilot has to bond with the craft and become one, hence they can control it manually from any location. For efficiency and effectiveness while in operations it has been programmed to navigate itself in certain boundaries. Plus the automatic mode enables it to follow a particular flight path.

How does the British drone fly under the radar?

How does a Raptor fly under radar? This is a question that seems to bother many people. What you should know is that there are many factors involved in ensuring the drone obtains a stealth mode. This starts from the material used to build the aircraft and its design as well.

Apart from the material and design of the UAV, there is the communication systems used on the drone. The system enables the pilots to communicate with the drone at any point without giving away its position. That’s not all the thermal image is a crucial aspect in maintaining the stealth mode.

The engine inlet and exhaust system on a plane usually emits a heat signature that shows under the radar. Therefore, the BAE engineers designed the drone not to produce heat that could be detected under the enemy’s radar. This gives the Raptor a surprise element which is an advantage to the military when collecting intelligence of carrying out an attack.

The British Taranis or Raptor remains to be one of the amazing inventions we have seen in the drone industry. It’s the only UAV in the world that has such features and capabilities. However, we still don’t know if the drone shall see the light of day. The data acquired from the test carried out on the drone is still being analyzed and the information shall be used in the development of new drones.
