When flying FPV there are many frequencies that our equipment will run on, this is an FPV Frequency Comparison that may help explain some of the confusion when it comes to “what FPV Frequency to use when you must still think about your transmitter frequency and not interfere with that.

There are 4 popular frequencies used for FPV flight, here is an FPV Frequency Comparison list and  some key points about them;

900 MHz Medium/long range

900 MHz for FPV video is a great option for long-range video, you just have to remember you then can’t use 900MHz for your control link, FrSky R9 or TBS Crossfire or they will interfere with each other. Other options for control would be 2.4Ghz like FrSky D16 or 433MHz Dragonlink. This frequency can penetrate obstacles like walls and trees making it good for long-range. If you are able to make your own antenna it is quite easy with 900MHz but they end up having to be quite large. This is often why you mainly see this frequency being used on fixed-wing craft. The downsides of using the 900MHz FPV frequency is that cellular companies use this frequency so there can be interference from cell towers. FPV video quality is also not as good as 5.8GHz FPV frequency in comparison to 900MHz FPV video.

1.2 GHz (1200 MHz) Medium/long range

1.2 GHz (1200 MHz) Medium/long range is a good option when doing an FPV frequency comparison because it too can penetrate obstacles like walls and trees making it good for long-range. Making antennae for this frequency is quite easy to do as well, although they are quite large in size for smaller models. This frequency can work with 2.4GHz control but some special filters must be used to get the best results. The FPV video quality isn’t as good when doing an FPV frequency comparison with a 5.8GHz FPV video.

2.4 GHz (2400 MHz) Medium/long range (longer range than 1.2 GHz)

2.4 GHz (2400 MHz) is a long-range FPV video system when considering an FPV frequency comparison with other video bands. There are many antennas and types and designs to choose from. It doesn’t penetrate through objects as well as 900MHz and 1.2GHz so make sure you have open airspace between yourself and the model. 2.4GHz for FPV frequency comparison is a fairly used band. Many remote controls including the majority of today’s R/C toys and hobby-grade models use 2.4GHz for control. Even though many of these protocols have a hopping feature it can still pose some interference when doing an FPV frequency comparison of your options.

5.8 GHz (5800 MHz) Short-range/Medium range

5.8 GHz is the most commonly chosen because of its ease and small size. It is great for short-range and can go to medium distances in a clean RF environment. Works well with 2.4GHz transmitters which make this ideal band when commencing an FPV frequency comparison for FPV racing and FPV freestyle. That also makes this a crowded band because Wi-Fi routers are commonly on this band as well. The antenna is small and can be mounted in numerous configurations. Many design options are now available to further enhance your needs.

When it comes to choosing a video frequency for your FPV model there are many things to consider, like how far you plan to travel, with how many other pilots in the air and the environment. Most pilots do some research on FPV frequency comparison and never consider the environment they fly in, never noticing the cell tower they passed or a heavily surveilled neighborhood nearby.

Consider what frequency your transmitter will be emitting and start from there. Just remember that FPV flying is a technical achievement that doesn’t always come easy nor cheap. Purchasing the correct equipment is the easy part, putting it all together into a machine that can take you literally to new heights will leave you hooked for life.
