FrSky Taranis 5dbi Antenna. In this FrSky Taranis 5dBi Antenna you are going to learn how to replace the stock antenna for a 5dBi antenna. First of all, you have to bear in mind that you are the only responsible of doing this modification, so if anything goes wrong you will have to take care of it personally.

  1. To install the FrSky Taranis 5dBi Antenna, you have to start by disassembling your Taranis, unscrew the screws at the back, if you need to, you can also loosen the switches between front and back part of the case, and open the case very carefully, for this you have to make sure not to rip out any internal wire.
  2. Then, with the Taranis opened in two parts, disconnect any wire on the side of the circuit board where the stock antenna is soldered so that you can work easier in that part with the FrSky Taranis 5dBi Antenna. At this point, you should be able to see the antenna soldering covered by some type of hot glue, in order to remove it, it is recommended to use isopropyl alcohol, as it evaporates fast and it doesn’t leave residues. By doing this you have less chances to damage any component.
  3. Now that the solder is exposed, is time to work on it to install the FrSky Taranis 5dBi Antenna. Start by desoldering the stock antenna, for this, it is recommended to use some flux so that the core and ground tin melts at the same time making the stock antenna easier to remove. After this, make sure to clean the pads where the antenna was soldered with fresh tin to increase the quality of the final solder.
  4. While the previous antenna was soldered directly to the PCB, the FrSky Taranis 5dBi Antenna needs a pigtail which is the one which will be soldered to the PCB instead. Take the pigtail and introduce it by the hole where it was the antenna, press until the SMA connector fits but it has to remain outside of the case. To solder it up, tin the ground to make it easier for soldering.
  5. In order not to damage the soldering pads during the FrSky Taranis 5dBi Antenna installation, place the core of the pigtail over the pad where it was soldered the core of the stock antenna and align the GND so that this also remains over where the GND was soldered before, once you have this, solder the GND first because its solder will be more resistant and then solder the active element, the core, to its pad, by doing this, you will avoid to tear off the core pad.
  6. Now that everything is soldered in place, you are almost done, make sure that the antenna screws in the right way, if it does, you can use hot glue to stick the pigtail to the PCB so that it doesn´t moves around and it doesn´t break down. Finally, connect again all the wires of both sides of the case, and screw them back and you are done. Just the last thing, make sure that apart from now every time you power on your Taranis you will have to have your antenna connected so that you don’t burn the transmitter.

Range Check. Now it's time to flight, but after any real flight it is mandatory to make a pre-flight range check in order for you to make sure that the FrSky Taranis 5dBi Antenna installation has been done successfully. For this first flight you have to be aware of reflections from nearby metal fences, concrete buildings etc. that can cause signal loss during the range check flight.

In order to do correctly the flight range check of the FrSky Taranis 5dBi Antenna, is important to follow some steps which are shown then. First, you must start by placing your model around at least 60cm above any material that can cause the already mentioned signal reflections, such as metal, other aircrafts, or even the radio transmitter.

Next thing is to make sure that everything in the aircraft is working correctly, so in case of failure you are sure the problem isn't originated in the aircraft. Some problems that can be caused by the aircraft can be caused for example by the receiver antenna position. If conversely there isn't any problem after the FrSky Taranis 5dBi Antenna and the range check flight doesn’t show any problem, you can now fly freely and with confidence on the system.
