The range of your transmitter is a crucial aspect of this hobby because it can even save money by avoiding failsafe and getting connection lost with the receiver. Different transmitters have different ranges with different receivers and it depends on many other aspects also. So during this article, we are getting to find out how to try to Frsky Taranis Antenna modification.

Simply doing this modification might not offer you extended range if that's what you're thinking. we'd like to know the various aspects on which the range of your transmitter depends so as to know if you actually got to do that mod. It depends on how your receiver antennas are mounting, how they're mounted, in what orientation they're mounted, and therefore the orientation of the transmitter antenna.

Maybe you're not getting an honest range simply because of another reason just like the wrong antenna orientation. Troubleshoot your problem first and find if it’s associated with the range problems with your transmitter. Maybe you don’t even need this Frsky Taranis Antenna Mod in the least.

What is this Mod?

Have you ever ever wondered what quite an Antenna is on your Taranis. Then here is that the answer thereto question. it's a 2dB dipole that comes out of the factory on the Taranis and it's not removable (Except for the X9D Plus where it comes with a detachable antenna).

So during this Mod, we are getting to change that 2dB antenna to a 5dB antenna. we'd like to know the radiating pattern of both these antennas to possess a far better understanding of how this may help to possess a far better range compared to the stock antenna.

As you'll see from the image, the structure of the radiating pattern of the 2dB antenna is oval-shaped. However, the structure of the radiating pattern of the 5dB antennas may be a circle with a radius of quite that of a 2dB antenna.

The higher gain of the 5dB antenna changes the form of the radiating pattern and make it more directional than narrowing it. Hence it'll give more range to the left and right side of the antenna and fewer range on the highest and therefore the button. On the opposite hand, the 2dB antenna will give more range on the highest and bottom and fewer on the proper and left.

Assuming that you simply keep an antenna horizontally, it'll allow you to fly longer range with a 5dB antenna. But, if you place the antenna in an upright position, the signal goes to be much worse. that's why you would like to stay the antenna in an upright position if you're having the stock 2dB antenna to possess good signal strength.

So we are getting to do Frsky Taranis Antenna Mod where the antenna is going to be detachable which will allow you to modify between the 2dB and 5dB antennas. So let’s start

Step 1: Get all necessary Components

· 5dB Antenna & RP-SMA Pigtail -

This kit contains the 5dB antenna and therefore the RP-SMA pigtail which is important to try to to the Frsky Taranis Antenna Mod. Grab a 2dB antenna also just in case if you'll experience any issues with the 5dB antenna

 Step 2: Open the Taranis

1. Open the 6 Screws that hold the 2 halves of the Taranis

2. Remove the Ribbon cable attached to the rear body and separate the 2 halves

Step 3: Clean the RF Module

Now it's time to solder the Pigtail. But before that clean the RF Module PCB and take away the old antenna. there'll be leftovers of holt glue and you would like to get rid of it.

 Step 4: Remove Original Antenna

Once you desolder the antenna, remove the antenna and its holder employing a Plier or tweezer.

 Step 5: Solder RP-SMA Cable

Carefully solder the Pigtail without applying an excessive amount of heat. The RF PCB is extremely sensitive and applying an excessive amount of heat can even damage it. So take care and don’t damage the RF Module. Insert the RP SMA Pigtail with the Plastic part and add hot glue to put it there.

Step 6: Checking for Issues

Once you complete the Mod, you would like to see if everything is functioning alright. Do some range tests or check the SWR value and you'll know if there are any issues.

We have learned the way to do Frsky Taranis Antenna Mod and therefore the consequences which will be arisen if it’s not done carefully. it'll offer you more range because the radiation diagram is far broader than the stock antenna. Moreover, you'll change the antennas regularly with none soldering that creates it an incredible upgrade.

Many users have reported that this Mod has damaged their radios, hence take care when doing this Mod and roll in the hay at your own risk. What I can promise is, if you are doing it without damaging the RF Module, then everything goes to be fine. i will be able to be soon back with another tutorial. Till then, Safe Flyings!
