Introduction

This tutorial shows you how to flash the latest OpenTX version on your FrSky Taranis QX7 radio so that you may enjoy all the benefits of the OpenTX platform as well as allows you to use LUA scripts in your FrSky Taranis QX7 to control your VTX parameters among other things.

OpenTX is open source firmware for RC radio transmitters. The firmware allows you to highly customize parameters and features on you FrSky Taranis QX7 radio - much more than the stock firmware.

Required Items

  • FrSky Taranis QX7
  • Mini USB cable
  • Laptop/PC
  • Internet connection

 

Step 1: Putting FrSky Taranis QX7 radio into bootloader mode

Before uploading the firmware to the FrSky Taranis QX7 you need to put your radio into the ‘Bootloader Mode’. In order to do this, follow the steps:

  • Turn off your transmitter.
  • Push both horizontal trim switches inward.
  • While pushing both trim switches inward, turn on your FrSky Taranis QX7.

 

After doing the above steps your transmitter will turn on directly into the bootloader menu.

Select the “Write Firmware” option and plug-in your transmitter to your PC with a mini USB cable. Your PC should automatically detect and install the necessary drivers.

 

Step 2: Download and install OpenTX companion

Download the latest version of the OpenTX firmware for your FrSky Taranis QX7 from http://www.open-tx.org under the news section. Make sure you select the stable versions than Release Candidate(RC) for a stable experience. Download and install the OpenTX companion for your particular system (Windows, macOS, Linux).

 

Step 3: Configuring OpenTX companion for firmware upload

First, launch the OpenTX software on your PC.

Select the “Settings” button on the top of the OpenTX Companion software - the ‘gear’ button.

 

 

A pop-up window will now come. This is where you make the changes and customize the settings you want for your FrSky Taranis QX7 radio as the following:

 

Select the “Radio Profile” tab and enter the following options:

 

  • In the “Radio Type” drop-down selector, choose “FrSky Taranis X7/X7S” option.
  • Select -- “lua”– so you can use LUA scripts.            
  • Select the “Menu Language” you prefer for your FrSky Taranis QX7.
  • If you’re in the EU - select the option “eu”, else leave it unchecked.
  • If you are using the R9M module with the ‘flex’ firmware, select the option named - “Flexr9m”
  • Leave all other options in its default - unless you want to change them.
  • SD Structure Path: This allows OpenTX companion to populate the model image selector with the images that are on the card, and do the same for audio files.

 

 

 

Step 4: Updating the firmware on your FrSky Taranis QX7

 

  • Select the “Download” button on top of the OpenTX Companion software - the ‘downward arrow’ button. A pop-up window will now come.

 

  • Click on the “Download Firmware” button -  this download the latest OpenTX firmware for your FrSky Taranis QX7.
  • Then press the “Download SD Contents” button - this will open a window on your browser with the different releases of OpenTX firmware for different radios.
  • Select the latest one from “opentx-x7”.

 

Once all those steps are done, we can proceed to actually flash your FrSky Taranis QX7 radio.

Select the “Write Firmware to Radio” button on the left panel of the OpenTX Companion software - the icon with a gear, controller and the downward arrow.

 

The OpenTX companion software will now begin to flash the firmware onto your radio.

Do keep in mind that the status bar may get stuck at 25% even when it’s flashing the radio to 100% - please be patient. The process will be completed when the window closes.

 

Step 5: Copying SD card contents

 

After flashing the FrSky Taranis QX7, the contents in the SD card of the FrSky Taranis QX7 also needs to update. This is needed so that you may continue to use your custom audio sounds, scripts, etc.

 

  • Copy all the contents from your current SD card folders to the respective new folders to the new SD card contents you downloaded.
  • The new SD contents might have slightly different folder names but for the most part, it will be the same.
  • Make sure to delete all the previous contents from your SD card else it will cause the FrSky Taranis QX7 to show a warning when you turn on your controller.
